Gauteng’s cell melt down

The country’s three major cellphone network operators have urged Gauteng residents to be patient as they investigate hundreds of network-related complaints.

Eyewitness News has investigated countless reports of dropped calls, late short messages (sms’s) and connection errors.

Hundreds of complaints from cellphone users have been forwarded to the three operators, MTN, Vodacom and Cell-C, for investigation.

The companies have begun the painstaking process of calling each client to get a better picture about the problems they are experiencing.
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa is also keeping a watchful eye on the investigation. But the network operators say they have only just started looking into the complaints.
They say it may take a few more days before they can give possible reasons for the problems.

The complaints Eyewitness News has received range from calls dropping regularly to not being able to make calls because of error connection warnings.
Cell-C, MTN and Vodacom unanimously agree that they do not believe it is a problem with the province’s network infrastructure. But they each admit they cannot rule this out until they have finished in-depth investigations.
